Sulphur Plant Given Green Light to be Built in Southampton

May 29, 2013

SOUTHAMPTON, UNITED KINGDOM - Plans for a sulphur plant to be built in Southampton have been given the go ahead. The facility will be built on land at West Bay Road in the Western Docks, despite protests from nearby residents. A meeting of the city council's planning committee this morning approved the amended planning application.

A previous application by Oxbow, the firm behind the scheme, had already been accepted, but was amended to address fears from residents about smell and pollution from the site. Freemantle residents wanted the company to build a tree covered bund alongside the edge of the site, to shield the plant from their view. However, as this would need to be done away from the location of the plant, it was not something the planning committee could force Oxbow to do.
